Croatia is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Europe. This beautiful country on the Adriatic Sea has thousands of islands and many natural breathtaking natural beauties. No matter which place you decide to visit – you will certainly find something charming, unlike any other country in Europe. In order for you to properly prepare for your holiday to Croatia, make sure you read some of the following important information regarding this country.
 

Payment Methods and Currency Used in Croatia

 
Croatian currency is called Kuna, and one Kuna is divided into hundred lipas. The word ‘Kuna’ translates into ‘marten’ which is a weasel-like animal. Many centuries ago Croats used the fur of marten for trade, hence the name of the currency. Kuna`s abbreviation is Kn, and the currency comes in several denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 as paper money and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 as coins.
 
 You do not have to have Croatian money when traveling to Croatia, as you can easily exchange your currency in local banks and ATMs which are widely available everywhere across the country. Exchange rates are pretty good and there is an only small service fee, which mostly depends on the bank from your country. Have in mind that Kuna is the official currency in Croatia, not Euro. However, some hotel resorts, restaurants, private accommodations sometimes accept Euros although this is not a common practice.  
 

How to Get the Most Out Of Your Holiday in Croatia 

 
  • Croatia has plenty of great places to see, so do not expect to explore everything on your first visit. If you only have a week or two for your holiday, make sure you check out the capital Zagreb for a day or two and then head to the Adriatic Coast to explore beaches and nice old towns and villages. UNESCO site like Plitvice Lakes, Slavonian vineyards, Fortress City of Dubrovnik, Split, Pula and Zagorje Castles are a few places that you should visit. 
  • Due to the fact that Croatia is a popular travel destination, plan your trip ahead and book your accommodation in advance. Besides staying at hotels, you should also consider getting room accommodation in some of the private homes, as that is often cheapest option plus you can meet many helpful local people and make friends.
  • Drink local beers and wines, as Croatia has some great beverages. Ozujsko and Karlovacko are Croatia`s top beers, while the red Dingac and white Posip are great Dalmatian wines. Malvasia is another great wine coming from the region of Istria. 
  • Try Croatian seafood. Seafood coming from the Adriatic Sea is considered world class, so make sure you visit some local restaurant and try some of the delicious dishes. There are plenty of fish delights you can taste, so keep an open mind and sample local dishes like the mixed platter of shellfish and fish called riblja plata. 
  • Have in mind that the spring and summer months is the period when there are often mosquitoes, so bring a quality repellent with you. Avoid wearing strong fragrances, while wearing light colors also helps.
  • Before you travel to Croatia make sure you bring travel insurance with you, even if you are just visiting for a couple of days. Residents of the European Union should also bring their European Health Insurance Cards, which grants them the right to receive basic health care while in Croatia. These cards do not cover ongoing or non-urgent treatments, so that is why you should also have travel insurance. The number 112 is the universal number which you can call in case of an emergency.
  • Go out and be active while spending your holiday in Croatia. Besides lying on the beach and swimming in the beautiful Adriatic Sea, you should also find some time to explore some of the many hidden treasures of the country. Windsurfers should visit the island of Korcula for some great waves, paragliders should go to the Mount Ucka for practicing this extreme sport, while Vidova Gora on Brac is great for going on hiking and enjoying fantastic views. National Park of Paklenica and Krka Waterfalls are a couple of other great areas where you can relax and admire the natural beauty.
